Truth Revealed

Political conversation is often easy to enter, but hard to escape - unscathed that is. It is a common grounds that we all have an opinion on, even if the opinion is, "politics sucks."

I entered one of these easily ignited yet dangerous conversations with one of my coworkers recently. From what I could tell we shared similar political beliefs. We were both happy with the President-Elect, with both felt strongly about universal healthcare, and we both wanted out of Iraq ASAP.

This conversation eventually led to taxation, where my coworker revealed a tough truth. He interjected, "But honestly, if I was in a higher tax bracket, I would vote Republican." He quickly recovered from this by saying, amidst laughter, "but I never will be so it doesn't really matter."

Despite his attempt to resolve the situation, his original statement lingered with me. How could all of are talk on human rights, health care, and war all fade a way just because of a few dollars. Is this how all self-declared democrats feel? I hope not. If the party that I affiliate myself with can be swayed by the dollar, I want nothing to do with them.

But I know this is not true. I know that this is the exception. Maybe this guy was just talking in the moment, and maybee when he went home he realized the irony. I hope.
